    Question 120L starting difficulties

Does anyone on the forum have a rear-engined Skoda? I have 1987 120L (Estelle on UK market) with Jikov 32 carburettor.

I'm having trouble with cold starts. Choke on, engine will fire then appears to run out of fuel after about 4 seconds. Frantic pumping on the accelerator will give another 4/5 seconds life before the same starvation (?) happens. Problem cures after about half a dozen cycles (30-40 seconds perhaps) then runs fine.

I have checked carb and no obvious blocked jets, torn gaskets or leaks. The anti-dieseling solenoid valve has the internal needle/plunger missing (!), i.e. is open all the time, so can't be responsible.

Removing the plunger was a common one int olde days, a pair of Snap Off Lines Man pliers were very good at this. Have you got a 32 EDSR or 32 SEDR?

    32 EDSR
Carb internals looking quite nice and clean....
....but still some sort of problems there.

The car is new to me but has had 160 000 km of various previous ownership.

You have checked the choke mechanism for correct movement? You should be able to get a shut off valve quite easily, it is an air cooled VW part.

    Thanks Crasher,

Is it possible that petrol is leaking back down through the fuel pump and the starvation I'm experiencing is because there is enough left in float bowl to squirt accelerator pump, but not enough for correct float height and mixture till petrol pump catches up???

Regards forum etiquette: is it enough for me to thank you for your first post, or am I expected to mark any and all replies I get. I havn't noticed this feature on the Fordson forum which I frequent.
